Jack and Lily's Giveaway Wednesday

It's Wednesday, and that can only mean one thing...

Jack and Lily's Giveaway Wednesday!!

These two little charmers couldn't wait to tell you what they were giving away last night. They begged me yesterday to give everyone a sneak peak of these fabulous goodies...

I cannot adequately tell you how incredible these room sprays from Scentsy are. I so wish someone would invent a way for smells to ooze from your computer screen, so you could know what I'm talking about. These fragrances are not only heavenly and addicting- they last FOREVER.

True story: last night I sprayed a puff of my Skinny Dippin' room spray in my bathroom. not because we do that kind of thing around here. But because it produces the most amazing fragrance of fresh green apples perfectly harmonized with refreshing melons and juicy pears.

This morning when I woke up and entered my bathroom, I immediately inhaled that intoxicating aroma...I looked around to see if my husband had turned our Scentsy warmer on...and realized it was the scent still lingering in the air from the night before!! When Sam came home from work I told him about that divine experience (have I mentioned how into smells I am? yes. I have.) and he said the same thing happened to him! He looked around for the Scentsy warmer, and wondered how our bathroom could smell so good without one turned on! I seriously cannot believe one little puff lasted over 9 hours. But it did! *note to self: stock up on Scentsy room sprays for kids' rooms, closets, church bathrooms, and laundry room. Stat.

SO here's the deal:

Jack and Lily are giving away one fabulous Scentsy Room Spray, winner's choice of fragrance, to one random commenter on this post.

I want you to answer a question for me, but first a little background info..

A week ago I was on a pretty big site, reading about ways to help my blog. I am always up for improving things to make it easier for readers to navigate the blog, etc. SO one of the top five recommendations was to KILL THE MUSIC on your blog. The author said the following (and admittedly my face got a little red reading it..I was truly embarrassed!)

This is absolutely, positively the most obvious of all the no-nos.  I am actually offended when I go to read a blog and music starts playing. Offended?, you ask? YES!  I think it’s rude that bloggers will push their music selection onto an unsuspecting reader. How do you know I’m not already listening to my own playlist as I browse through my favorite blogs, and you’re implying that YOUR song selection is better than mine? Or what if it’s late at night, I’ve got my laptop in my bed, and my husband is asleep next to me? He does NOT want to wake up to your (horrible) song selection which starts blasting before I get a chance to turn it off. I know what you’re thinking, that YOU have great taste in music and just can’t help yourself but to share your wealth of super cool taste with the rest of the blogosphere. Well, I say, Great!, then by all means, write a post, or even a weekly series, about music that I (as a reader) absolutely MUST listen to! I might even go listen to it! But it will be on my terms, and it won’t wake my poor tired husband.

OUCH.

I wrote to the author and told her that I actually get positive comments about the music on Lily's blog quite often...here was her response:

I used to have my playlist on auto-play, and like you, was very flattered by the compliments I got from visitors who enjoyed it. But, after hearing the same critique of auto-play music from sources I trusted and admired, I came to realize that the number of visitors I was losing was probably a lot greater than the number of people who enjoyed the music. I have to admit, it was hard for me to turn off the auto-play. I was afraid that I'd lose those people who said that they visited my blog specifically for the great music. I'm glad to say that the music fans haven't gone away. They know that they can still visit and simply hit the "play" button. That's my two-cents as someone who's been in the same position.

My advice (unsolicited, of course), is that if you decide to keep the auto-play on your blog, just make sure the control panel is in an easy to find location, so it can be disabled, if the reader chooses to enjoy your content without a music accompaniment.

SO, dear friends- I really must know. Do you agree with this sentiment? I promise I won't get my feelings hurt if you answer honestly. And I realize probably not every reader is going to feel the same way. But I really don't want to be scaring readers off because of the music here...so tell me what you think. If it were up to YOU...would you prefer Lily's music set to auto-play, or set to manual play, or gone all together.

Again- every comment is appreciated, and you don't have to say you like the music here to be entered to win:) You just have to say what you think!

Winner will be drawn at midnight and announced tomorrow.

Happy Wednesday!
**EDITED TO ADD: the day has hardly even started and the people have spoken! I expect many more comments about this, because clearly the author of that article knew what she was talking about. For those of you who like music on auto play (helloooooo, Cathy!) enjoy it while it lasts:) SO glad I asked!

I like hitting play myself because I usually either have pandora playing or a sleeping baby. But I just hit pause on auto play, so I've never left a blog because of it!

I usually have the volume on my laptop turned off when I start up the blogs I read (I open them all at the same time to load) because it is a bit of a mind frazzle when music on different blogs start playing in conjunction. I would have the music on manual play, then the people who want to hear it can. I like to be able to load a video on your blog to watch without having to scroll down and pause music so I prefer it not to be in autoplay.

babypelly said...

Sadly, I have to agree - while I have found new some songs I LOVE from your blog (to the point where I put the audio player in one of my posts because I wanted people to hear one of your choices!), I do not like when music is forced on me and always turn the sound off when reading blogs. So it's usually neither here nor there. HOWEVER, I do find it annoying when you post a video because I have to scroll all the way down to the player to turn it off and then scroll back up carefully to find the video again because I've lost my place. :(

Anna said...

I love your music and have downloaded a lot of the songs from itunes after hearing them on your blog. However, It is hard when you music is automatically on when you post a video. Not that scrolling down to the bottom to pause it is a big deal but it would be easier if your blog had music that we could turn on ourselves.

my family said...

honestly the music doesnt bother me, when I look at blogs I have the music turned off anyway.THe only time it is a problem is if i have a few blogs on and i want to watch a video (like sweet Lily) then I have to find the blog with the music and turn it down.I have found some pretty good songs through other blogs though. BUT you do have my mind going ...maybe I should get rid of my music?????IDK i really like some of my songs, we will see:)

Anna said...

I meant to say that pausing the music during a video isn't a big deal...not that it is :)

Mandy said...

I like your song choices, Patti. I do have to remember to mute the sound on my computer before I come visit Lily when my hubby is already sleeping, too. I can totally relate to feeling terrible after I open a blog and wake my sleeping husband. He rotates day and night shift, so I've had to learn to be aware. I would leave the play list but set it to manual start. Sometimes I come here just to hear what song is playing :)

Colleen said...

Honestly, I know to hit mute prior to coming to blogland. I love all the inspirational music that you always have but I would prefer to be able to hit play myself because it often interferes with sweet lily videos and no it's not a huge deal to scroll to the bottom to turn it off but I would prefer to be able to hit play myself

Karrie said...

I love the music, Patti! My first response is, don't change a thing. But, now, after I have seen some of the comments from others, I am rethinking that. And it makes me rethink my music I have on my blog, too.

April Vernon said...

Very interesting. I never thought of that, but I do get irritated when I hear country music on a blog. LOL. On the one hand, Kelle Hampton's music is one of my favorite things about her blog & it really sets the mood, but I do often hit mute before opening a page or turn off their music so I can listen to my own. I'd LOVE to know the website you went to. I'd like to get more followers but don't want to follow a zillion blogs.

RK said...

I'm a huge fan of music, but this is one time I prefer it to not be playing unless I start it myself. When I do blog designs, I generally encourage people not to have auto play music. I have had many a situation when I go to a blog and forget to mute only to have music blurted out and wake up a kid or embarrass me for a sec in a waiting room. I generally growl a little and close the window. :) it is not the biggest deal ever, but I definitely prefer no music. A player in a sidebar is fine, just not on autoplay.

As a timely occurrence, as I was typing this and the music started playing, KiKi is watching Sid on PBS and she said, "Mom, I'm trying to listen to Sid!" And I'm on my phone this time... forgot again!

Laura said...

I love the music selection and like that it is on auto-play. Many times after reading your blog I turn it up and listen while doing my housework.

Kim said...

Love your blog - not a fan of auto play music on blogs. I always end up muting my volume when I read a blog with auto-played music...

Kelly said...

I actually do agree with this sentiment, but am not affected by it. You are on my Google Reader list, so I can't hear what you are playing. I do something similar to what the author suggested in that I have a separate group where I make song suggestions. My friends seem to appreciate that a lot and give me suggestions on songs to highlight. However, autoplay won't make me stop reading a blog.

Sandryte said...

I shall admit I don't like websites with music, either, because usually they start too loud and unexpectedly. While I read all blogs on GoogleReader, there is no sound, so it doesn't bother me whether a blog has music on or not at all. But on the other hand, I'd love to know what a blog-writer listens to, what kind of books read etc., but only when I want it, not compulsory :)!

I would say, you should keep the player, just on manual setting. All in all, great website, great family, great giveaway! There is no any single think I would not like on your blog.

I usually stop the playlist too - I love to watch the videos on blogs and the music usually gets in the way of that. :)

Monica said...

The first thing I do when I load this blog is to scroll to the bottom to stop the music. It's not the songs (I've honestly never listened to any), I just prefer quiet. No offense intended! Love the photos and the links.

nicole said...

I think your music selections are a reflection of you and make your blog all that more special. I actually like music in the background while I'm reading because it sets the tone for what the author has wrote. I think you should stay true to you ~ if you like the music, keep it.

Ginger said...

I love the music you pick generally, but I totally agree that music on blogs is one of my #1 pet peeves. I'm already listening to music when I get on to read blogs or the kids are listening to an audiobook or their Latin lesson and I have to stop and find the player, then pause it, then go back and replay what we were listening to. .. anyway, to be perfectly blunt I can't stand it.
Love your blog, don't like the music. :)

Heather said...

My husband calls me a "sound-phobe" because I am one of THOSE people who isn't fond of being surprised by the music when I'm reading/surfing. BUT, I'd never stop reading a site solely because of the music. I just keep the sound muted! So honestly, I don't even know when a site has music playing!

Griz said...

I like the music, but I have to partially agree w/ the advice. If you are going to run music on auto-play, the control panel should be at or near the top of the screen. That way the readers don't have to go searching for it if they want to turn it off. Of course, I know that yours is at the bottom of the page b/c I visit it often. But new readers may tend to close the site if they can't find it fast enough.

NikkiB said...

I am sometimes reading when kiddos (and/or hubby) are sleeping also, so I'd like manual start as well! :) :) Also, when you have videos (which I love), it's nice not to have to go find it to stop it. But, def keep playlist on your side bar with manual start!! :) :)

Michelle Z said...

I have to admit, I keep my speakers turned off, because I can't stand when blog music pops on.

Love,

Heidi Ehle said...

I have to admit...I love you, I love Lily, I love your blog, but I usually turn off the music first thing.
There are great songs on your playlist. I especially like the first one that's on there now. Maybe having it be a manual playlist isn't a terrible idea.
It would makes it a whole lot easier to view those cutsie Lily videos too! :)

Love to all of you,
Heidi

Rachel said...

I would prefer to choose whether or not to play the music myself. I often am listening to my own music when I am reading blogs, so then I have to quick turn off one set of music. Also, its hard when a blog with music posts a video b/c first you have to disable the music before you can see the video. I have skipped videos because of this.

Brenna said...

I enjoy your music selection, but it does interfere sometimes when I'm either already listening to other music, or if I want to watch one of your cute videos. I say keep it, but put it on manual play? And, just so you know, don't change TOO much about your blog b/c we love it just the way it is. : )

I my self fell in love with blogging world after being
introduced to kelle hamptons blog, who uses music. I loved the whole words corrilating with the pictures corrilating with the music. At times I rush to mute my computer when a baby is sleeping or I don't want my hubby to know I am on the computer... Again. But over all I love music on blogs.

angie said...

I do love the music you pick- you are really good at pairing up music with what you've written. The only problem I have is when you have a video. I want to hear Lily's sweet voice, so I have to scroll way down to the bottom of the page to turn the music off. If you moved the control panel to the top of the page, that would be really helpful. BTW- I got my Scentsy order yesterday, and I was so impressed- they had a refrigeration pack in the box to keep my bars from melting. I am excited to try a new scent today, and you're not kidding about the long-lasting scent from the room sprays. They are awesome.

I love music! All types and genres honestly! I have to admit, however, that I mute the volume on my laptop. I am just not always in the position to hear music. Honestly I find it sor of distracting (not here per se but in general)!

It is the wonderful stories, pictures and experiences that I come for!

Jonana said...

I do not like music on blogs. I've never left a blog or stopped reading a blog just because it has music though. I just turn the volume all the way down and quite honestly, that's usually where I keep the volume on my computer anyway. So, while I don't like it, it's not a deal breaker either.

Sarai said...

I love the music. I don't listen to it every time I come to your blog. If my kids are awake we listen to it. If one of them is sleeping the volume is off.
I say its your blog, your sharing your life and your babies with us. If you like having the music then keep it!! ;)

Gretchen said...

I have found some AWESOME songs from your blog playlist and others that I read. I also like when you correlate your music to your posts (like when you played Celebrate by Kool & the Gang? loved it!).

It really doesn't bother me too much. If I have Pandora on, I either pause Pandora or pause your Playlist. But, I do understand people with sleeping kids & spouses, or reading on a laptop in the dark in bed and being jolted by the noise.

I think, to please everyone, the best choice is to have it on Manual start.

Love me some Jack & Lily, Jack is SUPER cute in this week's picture! Thanks for the giveaway.

Elissa said...

Well, I always LOVE the music that I hear on your blog. With that said, I think overall I probably prefer a blog without music. However, as many others have said, music on a blog would never prevent me from reading it if I really wanted to.

Katrina said...

I'm afraid the first few times I started reading blogs I learned the hard way. My husband goes to bed early but likes for me to be in bed next to him while I read my blogs. There were so many times I would jar him from sleep and wake our little sleeping on the floor (long story about why she does that).

So now I always make sure to turn the sound off. I have no idea who has music on or not.

There are several songs I want to share on my blog so I have started making videos for the songs and put them on my blog as a post. I wish there was a way to just put a song on a picture and if the person wanted to her the song that goes with the picture they could just click on it.

I agree with Nicole...the music is you and part of your blog and I love it...that being said, since it is a public blog used to advocate for Reece's Rainbow and there are people visiting who are turned off by the music, take it off auto-play because the advocating is more important than the music...and I can go to Riceroom to get my fill on the music ;)

Ruth R said...

I (almost!) always keep my loudspeakers off so I don't get other people's blog music disturbing my family if I'm online and they're resting. Those times when I forget to turn the sound off and something starts blasting out can cause problems! I'd say switch to "manual start" so that people have to actively select to listen if they choose to do so, but whatever you decide I'll still keep reading your blog!

Dana said...

Two Cuties!!!! I have been considering remove the music from my blogs since I've woken up my poor baby while reading blogs!!! You, however, should not remove your music. It is absolutely beautiful and delightful to listen to!

sunnylattegma said...

I vote for keeping your playlist on the side bar. I am another that mutes the music before I begin to go to my favorite blogs, and yours is the first visit I make!

Shauna said...

Patti I love the music you choose...you have good taste :) However I almost always have the sound off on my computer because I can't read and listen to lyrics at the same time (I'm weird that way) and sometimes I have more than one blog open with conflicting music. The only thing about yours is that the player is all the way down at the bottom so it is hard to pause it for watching videos and such...but seriously Gabrielle's Oboe...yeah, really good stuff!

Jennifer said...

love your blog, the music, not so much. It always takes me a sec to find button and turn it off.

Jennifer said...

I'm in agreement with most of the other posters - I love your blog and your writing (even though I just found you last week!) - but don't love the music. I usually keep the sound muted on my computer, but often open a video to watch from some blog, or yours - and also have several blogs open to read at the same time - so I have to figure out which blog has music playing so I can stop it so I can watch my video - and then find the player!
However, it is YOUR blog - so YOU get to choose ultimately, and I don't think any of us are leaving because of your music! :)

Brooke said...

I ahve to say I kinda agree.. although I leave my speakers on mute at work, so i dont have that issue, but at home i do feel slightly annoyed when I come across an autoplay, but half the time i do enjoy the music.. so its a hit *& miss. I agree with the point that if you are going to have auto play to put it in an easy to find loaction to turn off. I dont think it will make readers NOT come to your page. It will just remind them that the option is there to turn it off the next time the come.

I Like the music, it is just as easy to me to go down and hit pause if I don't want to listen to it. Or to mute my computer. But I can see where this writers advice comes from, there have been blogs I have opened and was not expecting to blasted out of my chair by hard rock music! And then had a hard time finding the player to turn it off! And I also like to keep things quiet at nap time so I try to mute my computer during those times. So I guess putting it on manual play would be the best option. ** Side not here, your blog always makes me want to go read/watch Pride and Prejudice because of Dawn by Dario Marianelli on you playlist! Love that song!

Leah said...

i honestly don't seem to notice it unless i have speaker on & I am distracting people.

Elindsey said...

I like listening to the music when the post is mostly pictures. But when I am reading I usually turn it off... Or I'm listening to Odyssey already. Ha!

Regina said...

I generally have the speakers off on my computer. I honestly didn't know for a long time that you even had music. I think it's nice to offer the playlist to those who want to hit play but I think it's probably good to have auto-play off. I don't feel like I need music when I am reading.

asplendidtime said...

I really hate the autoplay! It has indeed discouraged me from clicking on other posts because it will start all over again. I have also stopped visiting blogs because I dislike the autoplay so much.

I got so excited when as a Canadian many of the sites' (American) players no longer play for me! :D

Your blog is lovely Patti, and your children are so beautiful!

I hate hearing music on blogs. It doesn't "offend" me, but it annoys me. And when I'm reading in the middle of the night with a nursing baby while the world is sleeping, sudden, unexpected loud music can not only scare the life out of me, it may also wake someone who needs to stay asleep. I always read your blog with the volume turned down.

Amy said...

Wow, while I am guilty of opening my own blog sometimes just to listen to the music, I often have to rush to stop music playing on other blogs so I can hear my own. LOL I believe I will be taking that advice also!! *blush*

I dont know why I could not left a message in your previous post, anyway I want to say thank you for mention my blog in your post. I will update it soon!!Huge you.

I admit it. I don't like it. I silence my computer usually and when I forget to I always pause the music even if I like the song. I find it distracts from my ability to read the posts. But for videos, montages, etc. it's great.

Jonny Quest said...

I have several opinions on the matter:

1)It's just as easy to click "play" as it is to click "pause".

2)Some people's music may be more, shall I say, repulsive than other's (i.e. I listen to Skillet and you listen to Frances England).

3)I like how you moved it closer to the top so I don't have to scroll ALLLLLLLLLLL the way down to click a button.

4)We're talkin' first amendment rights here people! Freedom of expression! Power to the people! (That's a joke by the way.)

5)What does this have anything to do with Scentsy stuff?

I don't like the auto-play music because dh turns the volume all the way up when he uses the computer and I don't like things that loud. I usually read in google reader but when I click on a post that particularly interests me, I am always scrambling to turn down the sound when the music suddenly blasts through.

Definitely not a fan of auto-play. Especially when the control panel is at the bottom of a blog...sometimes it takes forever for the page to load and get the music to stop---and I usually forget to mute before I go to the blog.

First I would like to say that the pics this week are darling, You are so blessed :) I think the music should be set to manual play, I don't dislike the music but when you post videos it covers the sound and to be honest it sometimes startles me when music just starts playing. (I must admit that I am not a brave girl and i get startled easily) In the end it is nobodys choice but yours whether or not you have music, i doubt it is stopping anyone from reading your fabulous blog

Yay for the scentsy I need to try this stuff! Ok on to your question, For some unknown reason I don't like listening to music on blogs, it bugs the heck out of me, too much stimulation or something, so I usually hit mute, it has nothing to do with you i'm like that with all blogs, I actually took the music off of mine for that reason, it bugged me so there you have it, but I like everything else:) Specially the pictures!

Christi Harrison said...

I have my laptop on mute at all times because of music from blogs. It's not that I don't like it but I have young kids and I'm always afraid it's going to wake someone up. Plus, I often get the same song from numerous blogs and then I start to hate that song. And, I prefer to read with no music in the background.

I LOVE the music on your blog! I like it on autoplay. I wondered what happened when it didn't start playing when I pulled up this post. :) It is such a different feel without the music.
However, I wouldn't mind having to turn it on myself if it were in an easy place near the TOP of the page.
I didn't like having to scroll all the way down if for some reason I needed to turn it off (like when watching one of your videos or something.)
I will turn it on if it doesn't start automatically. :)

I guess I am too late to be a contestant for the giveaway, but that's OK! I just love seeing the pictures of my grandchildren and LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC. Yes, I have turned it off when I wanted to hear the video's and yes, it was way down at the bottom so I replayed the videos. I happen to really like your music selection and wish I was a tech-know-nerd so I could listen to your play list whenever I turned on my PC. OH well, can't have everything.

Patti, Love your blog. HATE any auto play music. Please don't take it personally. I don't hate YOUR music. Just any music that suddenly turns on when I go to a blog I love. I actually find it hard to read the blogs and I hate spending the extra seconds to search for how to turn it off. I admit I've even been guilt of simply moving on and not reading, just looking at the pictures if there is music autoplaying.
