interview with the Rice kids: a burden or a blessing?

The other day I had the opportunity to read some comments on a forum that really sparked an idea...the question that was asked was: would moms abort if given a diagnosis for Down syndrome during pregnancy.

Many of the answers were insightful, because really there is so much fear and misinformation out there regarding my daughter's diagnosis.

One of these fears was what would happen to our children with Down syndrome later in life...and would we be burdening our other children by leaving them the task of raising their sibling, if something happened to us as parents...

I hope Lily's life can educate and inform and inspire others to accept those who have been blessed by an extra chromosome.

I know it has mine....

That's a beautiful video! I used to be concerned about our youngest daughter being taken care of when she gets older, but I now know that her sisters will take good care of her! My oldest is 17, and she's like her second mom...we've talked about rotating her around :) Only thing is, they have to marry men who love their sister for who she is! Thanks for sharing!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! My only concern....if something happens to you guys, you may have a family feud over "who gets Lily"!! LOL!! :) :) Such sweet kids you have. I wanted to jump thru the screen and pinch their cute cheeks (I'm sure your boys would love that!) LOL!! :)

Lily would never be a burden in our house! Oh wait, we are older than you are. lol

Very sweet to hear your kids responses, and I love hearing "and I love her!" Yes, they do.

LOVE THIS! How beautiful to interview all of your children while holding Lily. Excellent post that I hope will relieve many parents' fears about the effect having a child with Ds will have on their family.

Great video. LOVE! I would be afraid to interview Aidan at this point he might say I am outnumbered not only by sisters but by chromosomes LOL!

My daughter is watching television, so I haven't watched your video yet, but... My husband and I got news today: Our unborn son has Down Syndrome. We will not be terminating our pregnancy. We love our son and we know we can handle this. I've read some wonderful things said about children with DS. I appreciate knowing now so that I can learn a lot and connect with local (and online) support before our son is even born.

(Your blog was recommended to me by a friend.)

You and your family are both precious and inspirational! I feel the need to address the subject a little bit in general. Are we not called to a life of love and sacrifice? To raise our children to do the same? You guys are such a good example! I think that there are times we can lose track of what is really important and this video shows what is important :) We need to raise children to a life that is fulfilled in Godly things not one focused solely on seeking pleasure and the "good life" according to the world. What better fulfillment than to take care of a loved one if necessary! Thank you for sharing!

I have watched this 3 times now, it is amazing how all your kids share their thoughts according to their age and personality.
While I was on the other side I used to feel sorry for children with disabilities and their families. Now I know that it is children who live without love, that I should feel sorry for.
